The lyrics were written in 1937 by Johnny Mercer for music composed by Richard Whiting. It was the love theme in the famous Bogart-Bacall film Dark Passage based on the David Goodis novel. The song first appears in the movie sung by Jo Stafford. It returns as an instrumental when Irene Jansen reunites with Vincent Parry, now known as Allan Linnell, in the cafe by the bay in Pieta, Peru. .
